Stage Monkeys San Diego (SDSM) is a “tail” of an association of Stage Monkey groups founded in Lafayette, LA in 1998 performing long-form improv. Christopher George, a LA (that’s Louisiana, not Los Angeles) transplant by way of Chicago created the original SDSM group in 2009, immediately installing himself as dictator, head groundskeeper and coach. Over the past five years, the SDSM has included approximately 15 members, many performing long-form for the first time. Today the Monkeys are comprised of Marc Shanahan (founding member), Maria “MarMar” Angellela (4 years), Akshay “The Akshperience” Sateesh (4 years), Dan Venti (4 years), Marley Rae (1 year) and Mark “PT” Tomaszewicz (4 years).
Originally, SMSD produced its own shows and had no regular schedule. Starting in 2010, the group’s schedule picked-up with quasi-monthly shows at the Moxie Theater in Rolando. Since then, SMSD has performed at a winery, on the streets in El Cajon, a rooftop downtown, churches, Twiggs, Mueller, Cafe Libertalia, Swedenborg, iO West, and many other places. Now the group performs weekly at FCI, occasionally at Sidestage Improv, and randomly in basements, treehouses and the floor of the senate.
Through it all, SMSD has remained focused on one thing – having fun. The group is incredibly appreciative of the efforts of Chris George, thankful for all the support it received and proud to have played some small part in the incredibly improv community that has developed in San Diego.
Stage Monkeys San Diego hour-long 5th Anniversary Show is June 6 and includes alumni and friends. Come laugh and celebrate with them.
